Elavil (also called Amitriptyline) is indeed a sleep aid and an antidepressant and bipolar mood stabilizer. In some cases, it can be used to control enuresis (urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control). Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, increased appetite, nausea, tireness or weakness, unpleasant taste, and weight gain.
